The Meaning of Sci-Fi

I have gained a lot from interviewing sci-fi writer, critics and professors at the Oxford China Forum. Who impressed ( 使...深刻印象动人) me the most is Chen Qiufan ( 陈楸帆，中国系列小说作者，代表作《荒潮》、《AI2041》). In his opinion, science fiction is the greatest realism ( 现实主义) . In order to have a deeper understanding of reality, we need to understand science fiction itself and how it works to influence us and the world.

When we discussed about what will happen after human's death, Li Zhaoxin's ( 李兆欣，未来事务该机构合伙，科幻评论家) comment offered me a brand new perspective. He said, "You can't tell whether you already died yesterday when you get up this morning. Maybe you are just implanted with the memory, which makes you believe that you are the one that wakes up from yesterday. If you are not sure about whether you were alive yesterday and whether you are going to die today, it may be unnecessary to discuss what will happen after our death." What a fresh and interesting idea! I was deeply impressed.

In my opinion, this is just how science fiction has made a huge impact on us — by pushing us reflect on technology, society and ourselves. That is the meaning of sci-fi.
